Barter is cool. It's a little difficult if the two parties don't each happen to have what the other one needs. Medieval market moneys solved that problem - issued in the morning and expired in the evening. Or grain currency. But they really only work locally. Some of the blockchain ideas are good for long distance trade, or for organizing big groups of people, giving everyone an ownership share in an enterprise, and so on.
