I wonder if everyone would agree that the majority of medical advancements have humans most in mind. For instance, when a natural, unpatentable substance is found to cure a disease or treat an ailment, no clinical trials are done. No money to be made. So instead, the pharmaceutical industry tries to develop synthetic, patentable analogs to accomplish the same purpose.

Or look at new organ implants that only respond to licensed chemicals — like printers that won’t run off-brand cartridges.
